Winning essay from Sean Xue at the University of York

Many congratulations again to our law undergraduate essay competition 2025 winner, Sean Xue at the University of York. We are delighted to publish Sean’s winning essay.

Sean will be undertaking work experience with our competition sponsors, Brown Rudnick LLP, in London this summer. This is a brilliant opportunity and we wish Sean every success.

The essay topic this year was ‘What will be the challenges to the rule of law in the next 20 years?’.

The subject inspired law undergraduates at 26 universities across the UK to enter: we were thrilled to receive so many thought provoking, insightful, and interesting essays. A grand summary of the responses will be published shortly.

Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill CVO and Yasmin Batliwala MBE, Chief Executive of Advocates for International Development (A4ID), chose the winner in the final round of judging. The winner was announced on 14th May 2025 by The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales at the ILBF’s 20th anniversary event.
