Your chance to be a finalist and to join our 20th anniversary celebrations

With just over a month to go to the submission deadline, here is a quick reminder about the ILBF’s 2025 essay competition.

The sponsor of the essay competition in this our 20th anniversary year is international firm Brown Rudnick.  The winner of the competition will spend a week with Brown Rudnick in London this summer, an internship that will provide a fantastic career enhancing experience.

After three rounds of judging, the finalists will be selected and invited to attend our 20th anniversary event on 14th May in London when the winner will be announced by The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales. The winning essay will be published on the ILBF’s website, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association newsletter and the New Law Journal.

All the essays will be read by an experienced judging team of lawyers, culminating in the final round which will be judged by Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, founder and patron of the ILBF, Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill CVO and Yasmin Batliwala, Chief Executive of A4ID.

The essay competition is open to all undergraduates studying law at a university in the UK. The essay title is very relevant to our times and speaks to the mission of the ILBF: ‘What will be the challenges to the rule of law in the next 20 years?’

A list of helpful resources was published last week. And as the count down to the deadline approaches, we will be reposting helpful videos to inspire you to take part.

All the competition details are set out on the dedicated competition page here. The page includes links to the launch of the competition by Baroness Carr, the Lady Chief Justice, and to a recording of the online panel event where expert panellists discussed what the rule of law will look like in 20 years’ time.

We are looking forward to reading your entries and to hearing what the next generation of lawyers has to say.
