We are delighted that The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, has launched the ILBF’s law undergraduate essay competition 2025.
The ILBF essay competition 2025 is sponsored by international firm Brown Rudnick. It’s a fantastic opportunity to win a great prize and gives you the chance to research and formulate your ideas about an important topic. The law undergraduate essay competition 2025 is open to all law undergraduates studying in the UK.
Watch the film of the launch here.
In 2025, the ILBF is celebrating its 20th anniversary. This is a very significant year for the ILBF and a chance to reflect on the ILBF’s mission to support the rule of law and access to justice through sharing legal resources. The essay topic therefore looks ahead to the next 20 years which will be the era in which today’s law undergraduates hone and develop their legal careers. The subject for the ILBF’s essay competition 2025 is the rule of law, a foundational concept for all jurisdictions.
You will find the essay competition details, essay title and competition rules on this page, including how to enter, key dates and how to contact us if you have any questions.
The prize for the winning essay is:
- A week’s internship in summer 2025 with Brown Rudnick
- Publication of the winning essay in the Commonwealth Lawyers Association Newsletter
- Publication of the winning essay on the ILBF’s website.
The runner up essay will also be published on the ILBF website.
A team of judges from across the legal profession will select the best essays for final judging by: The Rt. Hon. Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, former Lord Chief Justice and ILBF founder and patron; The Rt. Hon. Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill CVO, former Supreme Court Justice, and founding member of the EU Forum of Judges for the Environment, and of the Global Institute of Judges on the Environment; and Yasmin Batliwala MBE, Chief Executive of Advocates for International Development: A4ID.
The finalists of the competition will be invited to attend the ILBF’s 20th anniversary event in May in London when the winner will be announced.
