Introducing Laiba Choudhury, our new Shipping Coordinator!

In this Q&A, we introduce the ILBF community to Laiba Choudhury, our new Shipping Coordinator. Laiba is a law student at the University of Surrey. She will be working as ILBF’s Shipping Coordinator for the rest of the academic year.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a law student at the University of Surrey from Brighton, with a strong interest in legal research and volunteer work. Outside of law, I enjoy working out and reading, which helps balance my academic life and keeps me grounded.

When and how did you come to be involved with the ILBF?

I was looking for a placement that would align with my values and give me practical experience in the legal field. The ILBF’s mission to improve access to justice resonated with me, so I eagerly joined to contribute to that cause.

What does your role as Shipping Coordinator involve?

I coordinate the shipping of legal books by managing forms, organising packing days, and working with volunteers to ensure efficient operations. I also communicate with recipients and shipping companies to make sure the books reach their intended destinations.

What do you enjoy most about working with the ILBF? What are you most looking forward to in the role?

I enjoy visiting courts and law firms, as it gives me a firsthand glimpse into the legal world I’m studying to enter. I’m most excited about continuing to build relationships with professionals and seeing the impact of our work globally.

What does the ILBF’s mission mean to you?

Access to justice is fundamental to a fair society, and the ILBF’s mission to provide legal resources to those in need aligns perfectly with my own values. Their work is crucial in ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to exercise their rights, regardless of their background.

What do you think are the key challenges facing the rule of law in the coming decades?

The growing disparity in access to legal resources is a major concern, especially with the rise of digital legal services. Additionally, as global legal challenges like human rights and climate change intensify, international cooperation will be vital to maintaining the rule of law.

What are your future goals and career plans?

I plan to become a solicitor and complete the SQE. Long term, I hope to work in a legal role that allows me to make a meaningful impact on global issues.

What is your favourite book?

The Housemaid by Frieda McFadden is one of my favorite books because it’s a fast-paced psychological thriller that really explores the complexities of human behavior. The plot twists are gripping, and the way it examines themes of power, manipulation, and survival makes it a compelling read, especially for anyone interested in character-driven stories.
