Supporting the African Prisons Project law students

The African Prisons Project has an extensive programme in Uganda and Kenya and works to bring Justice, dignity and hope to men, women and children in prison in Africa through healthcare, life skills, access to justice and leadership. The ILBF was delighted to send a shipment of student and practitioner books late in 2017. Ritah Nanyonga, Life Skills Lead at Luzira Prison, has recently sent us invaluable feedback about the impact of the ILBF’s books on the students who are studying for their law degrees. The success of the students is incredibly inspiring.

A room without a book is like a body without a soul

An old, Roman man once said “… a room without a book is like a body without a soul”. Within the Justice Changemaker Training Programme of African Prisons Project (APP), even if we didn’t believe this (which we do!), we would have no choice but to remain surrounded by books. After all, we teach and books are one of our tools.

The students whom we teach range from current inmates – male and female, to serving prison officers and ex-inmates. All study side by side and with one common aim: to improve their minds and their grasp of law.

Currently, APP run externally-examined University of London Distance Learning Undergraduate and Postgraduate Law Degree, in Kenya and Uganda. APP has achieved so far, four graduations of Bachelors of Law and six of Diploma in Common Law. At least one of our students has now progressed to the Postgraduate level and we expect others to follow soon.

We as Tutors enjoy the work that we do and feel that it has real transformative value in each of our students. We facilitate the learning of our students with the guidance of a wide range of resource materials that we use as reference materials thanks to you and share our experience and knowledge. However, nothing can be achieved without the enquiring minds of our students who do the hard work as well and the providers of our books, the tools with which we chisel and form the minds of those under our charge.

Many thanks to you International Law Book Facility for the books donation, which are making a tremendous difference in the lives of those we serve. We gratefully appreciate your continued support.
