In the past 10 years, the ILBF has shipped books to 42 countries across the world. After shipments are sent, we post an update here on the blog, and we also give updates from our recipients as to their feedback when the books arrive and are unpacked in their new location.
These interactions are really helpful both to potential recipients who can see the benefit that other organisations have received, as well as for our volunteers, who can see where the books that they packed are now living, and the people who are using them.
Our books are used in different ways depending on the organisation.
Where the recipient is a body that provides legal or professional training (for example, the Cambodian University of Specialities, the Kathmandu Law School, the University of Zimbabwe or the Bangladesh Bar Council), ILBF books are used to train lawyers and law students.
Where the recipient is a legal aid organisation or charity (such as the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic, the Legal Defence and Assistance Programme (Nigeria) or the Paralegal Programme (Zambia)), ILBF books may be used when preparing cases or giving advice, empowering at-risk citizens through the legal system and improving local perceptions of legal process as a tool for justice.
Where the recipient is a court or government body (such as the Office of the Attorney General (Bhutan), the Attorney General’s Ministry (Belize), the Rwanda Supreme Court or the Sindh and Lahore High Courts (Pakistan)), ILBF books are used to assist the court in grounding their decisions in established law and to provide a point of comparison with other jurisdictions.
The map below shows the countries we’ve shipped to – from the larger countries to the very small islands (so small that they are hard to show on our map, such as St Lucia, St Helena and Ascension Island, Montserrat, Federated States of Micronesia, Maldives, Mauritius) our books go to all jurisdictions who benefit from legal books.
If you have books that you can donate to the ILBF, please get in touch here. You can also download our preferred book list so that you are only sending titles that we can send to our recipients.
